Canning Original vs Canning Blue - What's the difference? Our Canning Original set is made from a cotton based composite material which creates a lovely warm, rich and full sound. It also absorbs small amounts of moisture which some people prefer as it can increase playing time before moisture becomes an issue. Canning Blue is based on the same Original design, but the body is made from a harder material which creates a slightly brighter, more vibrant sound, whilst also increasing volume output a touch in most sets of pipes. The materials do not absorb any moisture so can be very quickly and easily dried off during long practices or performances, giving an extended playing time.

Carbon Fibre vs Polycarbonate vs Inverted – What’s the difference?Either model of bass reed will usually work equally well in most sets of pipes, however each has a unique tonal quality and which one you choose is down to personal preference. The carbon fibre bass has a deep, robust sound whereas the polycarbonate is slightly mellower and tends to blend with the tenors more giving a warm, rich sound. The main benefit of the inverted polycarbonate reed is that in most sets of pipes it gives an extra degree of reliability when striking in. Like the standard polycarbonate reed, it has a warm, full sound.

Do the reeds require maintenance? Our reeds are very much hassle free and require no maintenance on a daily basis. Like all drone reeds however, after extended playing times it is a good idea to remove your drones from the stocks and allow the drone reeds to air dry. Occasionally it is good practice to clean under the tongue of the reeds to remove any dirt or dust which may have gotten trapped there. This is best done by sliding a clean piece of paper between the tongue and reed body, apply a small amount of pressure on top of the tongue and then slowly pull the paper out.
-
How long will a set of reeds last? The life span of a set of reeds will depend on many factors such as the amount of playing, bag type and even the pH balance of your breath. However, in the vast majority of cases you will get many years of trouble free playing. Plus, if you do think your reeds are wearing out, you can use our refurbishment service to return them to an as new condition for a fraction of the price of a new set.
-
How do I know if my reeds need refurbishing? The usual signs of a reed wearing out is that it may become a bit unsteady, tune a bit lower on the pin and sound a bit coarser than before.
